Last month, Balenciaga released a disastrous ad campaign that had serious consequences. The luxury company is caught in a storm of bad press and criticism. The campaign featured photos of children holding bears that were dressed in bondage gear. Brand ambassador Kim Kardashian announced that she was reevaluating her connections to the brand due to the disturbing campaign.
Kim Kardashian wasn’t the only collaborator to take notice of Balenciaga’s mistake. Adidas has started canceling preorders of the Balenciaga x Adidas Stan Smith collab. In a message to customers that preordered the collab, Adidas wrote, “We have taken the time to re-evaluate our partnership with Balenciaga and we decided to pause all product launches until further notice.”
The brand continues to confirm that preorders of the collab will not be fulfilled without specifying the reasoning behind the possible cancellation. Sneaker Freaker, the source that broke the news, reported that a customer who placed an order through Balenciaga received a similar email regarding the delay.
In the midst of the backlash, Balenciaga released a statement that read “We sincerely apologize for any offense our holiday campaign may have caused. Our plush bear bags should not have been featured with children in this campaign. We have immediately removed the campaign from all platforms.”
Adidas has not yet made a public statement regarding the cancellation or delay of its collaboration with Balenciaga.
